When it comes to making video content to market your business, it may seem easy to grab a camera and film a quick video. While that may be true, the likelihood of that video successfully marketing your business is not very high. If you are interested in creating quality video content for your business, here are the top 6 mistakes you should avoid making.

Number 6: Filming with poor lighting and audio quality.

A huge mistake you can make when shooting a video to use to market your business is filming with poor lighting and audio quality. Nothing can make your business seem less professional than using a poorly shot video to use to market your company. When filming a video for your company, you need to make sure you are filming with quality equipment and with people who are knowledgeable with the using said equipment. When on a shoot, be sure to check after every few takes to be sure that the lighting and audio quality are up to par because during shoots you can fix those mistakes, while it will be a lot harder to reshoot a different day or fix the problems in post.

Number 5: Making your video too short or too long.

Another mistake you can make when shooting a video for your business is either making your video too short or too long. If your video is too short, with a complex message, your target audience may not be able to understand the message you are trying to convey with your video in such a quick time that you have elapsed your video to be. On the other hand, if your video is too long, your audience might get bored throughout the video and stop watching before your message is conveyed, which also excludes them from taking in your content fully. When filming video content, you need to be aware of how long/ complex the message that you’re trying to convey to your audience is, and that is how you should figure out the timing for your video content.

Number 4: Creating your video without a game plan.

When creating video content, you need to have a well-thought-out game plan of what direction you want to take your video in, as well as ideas of what you want it to be. If you do not have a game plan and just pick up a camera and shoot a video, your message that you are trying to convey to your audience can easily get lost in translation. Most if not all great videos you see promoting people’s business all had, in the beginning, a game plan of what they wanted their video to become, and you should keep this in mind when it comes to shooting your video content.

Number 3: Not fixating on a single, clear message.

The message you wish to convey to your target audience is nearly one of the biggest mistakes you can make when creating your video content. Without a clear message, after watching your video your audience may be left confused, uninterested, or uninvolved with whatever you are trying to get across to them. For example, if you are trying to spread the message of ways you can recycle, while only showing a clown eating an ice cream cone in your video, your audience may be left without realizing the intent and importance of the message you were trying to convey to them. In all, when it comes to creating video content, I urge you to come up with a single, clear message that you wish to convey to your audience, or else your entire message may fall through the cracks.

Number 2: Failing to address your target audience.

Thinking about your target audience is a huge part of the process of creating video content for your business. When it comes to your target audience, whatever type of video content you create needs to appeal to them in some form or fashion. Without addressing your target audience, your video will likely fail to gain exposure from people outside of your target audience. For example, if you are trying to appeal to a younger generation about the importance of knowing how to sew on a button, older people talking about their favorite knitting techniques is not the route you would likely want to take. To create a successful video to use to market your business, you need to have a plan for the type of video you want to create, all the while keeping in mind who your target audience is.

Number 1: Not having a call-to-action.

One of the most important mistakes you can make when creating video content is not having a call-to-action for your audience to take. If you created a clear message and correctly targeted your audience in your video, having a call-to-action should be one of the most important next steps for your audience to take because if they do not have a clear next step, their receptiveness of your video content might dwindle. To have the next laid out for step for your audience, just make sure that your video gives them the inspiration, or directly tells them where they should go next. You need to make sure that, after your audience is done viewing your video content, they have a clear next step of what to do afterward, otherwise the engagement in your video might die down quickly.

When it comes to creating video content, it is easy to make a mistake, but it is just as easy, if not easier, to address and fix the problem. Keep in mind that no video is perfect, but avoiding these common mistakes will hopefully bring you closer to the video you are striving to create.
